Mad Max Wheelchair Costume Wins Cosplay And Beyond

It was only a matter of time that George Miller’s post apocalyptic epic “Mad Max: Fury Road” would infiltrate the world of cosplay. The costumes and makeup worn by various characters in the film are so raw and absorbing that you can almost feel the metal chains, wind-burned skin, and sandy wounds. A perfect source of inspiration for those who like to dress up and role-play. However, after seeing Benjamin Carpenter’s incredible Mad Max wheelchair costume, we think any future attempts to recreate the Mad Max look will be left in the dust.

Mad Max Wheelchair Costume Wins Over Cosplay World and Beyond

Benjamin Carpenter is a 20 year-old engineering student at the University of Central Florida. Carpenter was born with spinal muscular atrophy. He told The Mighty that his love for “Mad Max” and admiration of other disabled cosplayers inspired him to make his own costume. To create his ensemble, Carpenter transformed his wheelchair into a “war rig” complete with a “Warboy,” played by his friend and fellow cosplayer Amy Brumfield. The wheelchair is a Permobil C500 standing chair. Just like in the film when Tom Hardy’s character is being used as a “blood bag,” Carpenter is chained to the front of the rig and wears an iron mask.

MAD MAX DISROBES

Carpenter uncovered his brilliant costume at the Tampa Bay Comic Con (TBCC) where it received immediate attention, eventually making the front page of Reddit.

Thanks to Carpenter’s creativity, the “Mad Max” wheelchair costume is getting good mileage since making its debut. A second version is of a chariot. Thinking about Halloween already, Carpenter has plans to take it out and may use it as a prop in his family’s driveway. Gameskinny, he plans to use the chair for more “Mad Max” cosplay, possibly the guitar guy.

CARPENTER RESPONDS

“Thank you all so much for all the support and comments!” Carpenter wrote on Reddit. “I am utterly speechless at how this cosplay has been spread, all I can say is thank you for making this SO SHINY AND CHROME!”
