Netflix is Restricting Their Users, Is Hulu Next? Clapway

Netflix is getting rid of the five-star rating system for a better alternative, and users aren’t too happy. Could Hulu make the same adjustments?

According to reports, users were trying to hard to make themselves critics. As such, Netflix was getting funny indexing that didn’t make sense. They’ve decided to make some changes.

Enjoyment Over Quality

Apparently, Netflix users value quality over enjoyment. That was the initial premise of the five-star rating system. If a movie is crappy but entertaining. Users were more inclined to rate it in terms of quality.

The system factors this as a boring film, which leads to more discrepancies in the system. For example, Adam Sandler’s ‘The Ridiculous Six’ has the fastest rising viewing hours in Netflix history, but its rating is terrible.

Netflix Adjusting its Rating System

Now, the service shows an average rating depending on similar users. So, whenever a user picks a film, they will see the ratings from people with similar watch lists and habits. The service is still tuning out the new rating system will work. According to sources, it’ll be a mix of a like/dislike option or a match percentage based on ratings from similar users. The point is to make Netflix more tailored to specific users while not being overly personalized.

Hulu Could Change Their System As Well

Now that the system is adjusting user preferences, Hulu might be next. The Hulu platform is built similarly to Netflix. Users will often rate according to quality and not enjoyment. However, since Hulu has a much wider selection of content, it’s fair to say that it mostly takes popularity into account. That, and it also puts their original content on the forefront. The same is the case for Netflix.

The Importance of Streaming Services

Streaming services are quickly replacing cable, so there may come a point where ratings like this are removed completely. There could come a point where all ratings are averaged into a single overall rating. This would make the platform a little more universal, though less personalized. It might also take away from the humor in places like Netflix, where categories get hilariously specific. Where else would you find movies with ‘Cool Moustaches’ or ‘Mind Bending Romantic Foreign Movies’?
