Les Stroud: After Earth

In today’s world, people are far more dependent on manmade survival items when they travel than the past. They lack the knowledge of how to survive when they’re at the mercy of Mother Nature. What if your matches become wet? Or you’re separated from your group in the middle of the woods? It can happen to anyone. On any given adventure, the worst can happen, and we must be prepared. Many people lack the basic knowledge of how to survive in the wild. That is where Les Stroud’s newest survival trend comes in, After Earth.

Les Stroud IS nature. He’s the lone star of Discovery’s hit show Survivorman where Stroud films himself living in the wild all alone, with no camera crew or backup. Stroud is now a part of a new YouTube series called After Earth where he gives survival tips that are extremely important to know when battling the elements of nature. In Episode 1 of the series titled, “Take a Knee” Stroud shows the audience the importance of remaining calm and assessing the situation if you become lost on your adventure. Panicking and trying to retrace your steps may cause one to become even more lost and disoriented. This is just the beginning. Each episode features the importance of surviving one factor that could be the difference between life and death. It’s a great setup because the audience is never overwhelmed by information and can focus on one skill at a time. For example, one episode is titled, “How to Deal with the Cold” another is titled, “What to Eat.”

Les Stroud has demonstrated survival skills on nearly every kind of adventure one may partake in. There is no controversy in his work; no one questions whether or not his show is real or fake. Other survival shows feature extensive camera crews, the danger may be real, yet no host is ever truly alone in the wild. Stroud gets down and dirty, sometimes attaching multiple GoPros to his body just to get the best shot.

As an avid hiker and outdoorsman myself, I for one trust Les Stroud’s advice on how to handle the wild. Before my next adventure, I will sit myself in front of my computer screen and study some After Earth footage. Who knows, it could save my life.
