Nintendo Is Making Mario World A Real World

Even today, Nintendo is nothing if not a household name. Now, Nintendo is merging into the household name of an theme park, Universal Studios. Somehow this was not already a thing, but everyone’s favorite Italian plumber, Mario and his world, will have a world of their own in Universal Studio. Universal already has the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and that’s not even as culturally relevant, historically speaking. (Not yet.)

The deal was struck with Universal Parks and Resorts after a high profit margin by the Japanese video game giant–its first profit in four years. This was their time to make initiate Nintendo’s comeback. Nintendo’s Chief Executive, Satoru Iwata revealed Nintendo had actually been looking into the theme park business. It was just a matter of finding the right partnership.

When you think ‘Nintendo’, its difficult not to consider its storied past, devout following of youngin’ scamps and ol’ timers, and tradition. Looking at their history, Nintendo does not step out of its comfort zone much. Nintendo has an old-school status that makes it easy to understand their reluctance to adopt the newest fads. For example, their steps toward the mobile gaming market did not even begin until March of this year when they partnered with DeNA. In addition to the revenue expected from the opening of their theme park, the revenue generated from their newest gaming apps for smartphones and devices are expected to double its current profit in the upcoming year.

Did you know that the Wii U sold 9.5 million to PlayStation 4’s 20 million? Nintendo may have figured, maybe there is something to adapting, changing, and opening a theme park. In addition, this is the first time the Japanese video game giant has ever given another company its characters and story lines.

Universal’s theme parks are located in Orlando, Hollywood, Japan, and Singapore. No word has been released about which parks will be welcoming Nintendo’s attractions. Wherever it is, diehard Nintendo fans are sure to travel for. Of course this early on, not much is known about characters to be featured aside for the usual suspects (Mario, Luigi, Bowser….) Nonetheless, we look forward to the stories and characters being brought to life in a different way entirely.
