Australia: Extinct Volcanoes Discovered In Australia’s Terrifying Deep Oceans

Earth is a mysterious rock floating through space. As much as we think we have mapped the surface, and studied its nuances, it seems as though something always comes along and changes the understanding we have for this big, blue planet. Now, experts doing field work off the coast of Australia have accidentally stumbled upon a series of unknown extinct volcanos, and what they found there will haunt your nightmares.

The massive, dormant, extinct volcanoes of Australia

These giant extinct volcanos found 200 kilometers away from Sydney, Australia are believed to be at least 50 million years old, and were found nearly 5 kilometers beneath the ocean’s surface. This discovery is essential in building the complex maps necessary to build a better understanding of our oceans.

It comes as no surprise that there is a system of massive, extinct volcanoes, because of how little we understand about our oceans considering most of this planet is composed of it. To date, we have only explored 5% of the world’s oceans, and the Earth’s surface is 70% water. 95% of oceans on the planet are left to explored, leading many to wonder what else is out there besides unknown extinct volcanoes.

Scientists found more than they expected when they began looking into the heat signatures, which revealed the extinct volcanoes underwater. They also found some very interesting locals dwelling in the areas nearest the extinct volcanoes. They were shocked to find that young species living so far out living this far away from shore.

It was previously believed that when the young species were swept out to sea, that was the end of them, but this new research shows thriving populations of young species, including the quite disturbing scale less black fish. There is so much to be discovered of the world’s oceans, and if we scanned the entire sea floor we could find things beyond what the imagination could dream up.

For now, we will have to settle for these breathtaking underwater extinct volcanoes, as we keep looking forward to the many incredible discoveries that this great big blue planet has in store for us.
