New Technology ‘Li-Fi’ to Destroy Wi-Fi

A technology called Li-Fi, from data being passed through LED light bulbs, has been proven to be 100 times faster than Wi-Fi. A startup from Estonia is now looking into commercializing it.

Li-Fi Uses Light to Transport Data

As opposed to radio frequencies, which is the way Wi-Fi currently transfers data from one place to another, Li-Fi uses light. With this new development, Velmenni has designed a system called Jugnu to make what they call the next generation of smart LED bulbs.

This Technology is 100 Times Faster than Wi-Fi, and Greener, Too

These bulbs are able to transfer data through light to other bulbs, mobile phones, and to the internet. Currently, they’re developing an app for Android that can receive data from the technology and perhaps in the future, actively interact with it. Their current endeavors lie in developing smart lighting solutions for industrial environments and centralized Li-Fi networks for offices.

Li-Fi Won’t Replace Wi-Fi Just Yet

According to the lead developer of the technology, Harald Haas, Li-Fi will not replace Wi-Fi, because, in order for that to happen, all the incandescent lighting in the world will have to be replaced by LED bulbs.

It sure is a possibility for the near future, though. It would make for a more efficient alternative, and one that would me safer. What’s more, LED bulbs will provide not only lighting but also wireless data transmission. This would make for an even cleaner internet, and a greener world.
