Nintendo is bringing back the psychedelic feel of the 1990s and the Game Boy Color with the release of a revamped Pokemon themed 2DS gaming console. The video game giant is now accepting preorders for four new models in Japanese territory.
The New Psychedelic Gadgets Will Only Be Available in Japan
For now, these babies will only be on sale in Japan. Not only that, but they will also come with a version of Pokemon Red, Blue, Green or Yellow/Pikachu.
This new release comes in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the first release of a Pokemon game. The throwback console will be released on February 27, 2016, for $83. On the same day, Nintendo is planning to make a re-release of the original Game Boy Pokemon games, but for their new 3DS Virtual console.
This Marks the First Release of the 2DS in Japan
Usually, Japan gets first dibs for pretty much every new gadget and game that rolls out of Nintendo. With the 2DS, things were a little different. The game console hit the American market in October 2013. It’s pretty much the same thing as the 3DS, except it doesn’t display 3D images. It can play the entire library of 3DS games in 2D and most DS games as well.
New Psychedelic 2DS Comes With New Swag
The new psychedelic 2DS comes with Pokemon stickers, a special throwback theme for the main menu, and a poster that is reminiscent of the Kanto region map. Sources revealed that there is also a code to unlock Pokemon Mew, which can be used on the 2DS. The new console will also be able to play the 3DS’s Pokemon Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire as well as Pokemon X and Y.
Will this New Psychedelic 2DS Come to America?
There hasn’t been any word on whether or not this game console will head for the US. If it is any consolation, a red or blue version of the 2DS has been available in retailers in the US since last year, as well as Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The original Red, Blue and Yellow/Pikachu titles are also available to US gamers on the 3DS.
The return of the 2DS to popularity in America probably started from the price drop it has. Initially set at $129.99, Nintendo dropped the console’s price to $99 in August 2015.
