Did you know that Amazon was almost not the name of the site? Instead, it was almost called Cadabra, in reference to abracadabra. However, the lawyer of Jeff Bezos shot this idea down because he misheard the name as “cadaver”.

After that name was shut down, Jeff Bezos chose Amazon for two reasons. One, because he wanted a name that was large in scale because they dubbed their website the Earth’s biggest bookstore. The second reason is because back in the day website listings were sorted alphabetically.

Jeff Bezos had an old book in his garage, and it was named Fluid Concepts & Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought. Boy, that title is a mouthful, but the point is that was the first book the company ever sold.

The logo for the company is actually supposed to depict a smile that goes from the starting “a” to the “z”. This is done to show that the company is willing to deliver to anyone in the world.

Sometime during last year, Amazon experienced some issues with their website. They went down for around 50 minutes, and that was enough to miss out on nearly $5.7 million.
