KEVIN GATES: TOUGH BEGINNINGS

Like most popular rap artists, Kevin Gates did not come from a privileged background. Born in 1986, the Baton Rouge legend had a tumultuous upbringing. Gates saw his first arrest in 1999 at the young age of 13 for “joy riding”. Fortunately, he avoided more trouble during his formative years. This allowed him to attend community college at the age of 17. Furthermore, he began to see the positive aspects of education.

KEVIN GATES DISCOVERS INTELLECT IN PRISON

In 2008, Kevin Gates and music partner, Boosie Badazz, went to prison on separate charges. While this put a hole on Gate’s career, it became a pivotal moment for the chance. During his 31 months in prison, Gates earned a master’s degree in psychology; thanks to a prison program. Eventually, the prison released Gates on good behavior. From there, his mix of intellect and street culture helped with a burgeoning music career.

KEVIN GATES’ RISE TO THE TO TOP

In 2013, Gates released his mixtape to critical acclaim. Even Rolling Stone picked up the single, calling it the 40th best  song of 2013. Upon that success, Gates signed with Atlantic Records and released his first major mixtape Stranger Than Fiction. This album was praised for dealing with Gate’s psychological issues in prison and other topics of intellect. From there, it’s been a steady rise to the top for Gates and is primarily known for this “confessional anthems blending deep, personal lyrics with classic Southern beats. Furthermore, in 2016, Gates and his wife converted to Sunni Islam and even went to Mecca for Hajj.
