Cambodia is a country rife with hardship. Over the last 50 years, the small South East Asian country has felt the devastation of war, the unbelievable atrocities inflicted by Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, and the dark legacy that followed their failed attempt to implement one of history’s most violent and rigid forms of communism.
This is not to say, however, that all this misfortune has made the country a dangerous place void of all the things you might desire when looking for a getaway.
CAMBODIA IS AN ADVENTURER’S PARADISE AND HERE’S WHY:
1. THE TEMPLES
It’s been said a million times before, but I’ll add to the chorus: The temples of Angkor Wat are nothing short of awe inducing. But remember there are also dozens of other surrounding temples around Siem Reap and throughout the rest of the country—though smaller, some are arguably just as stunning and impressive, and certainly not as crowded as Angkor Wat.
2. THE HISTORY
There’s really no way to prepare yourself for the morbid reality you’ll have to face when trying to understand Cambodia’s history—especially if you go to the Killing Fields. But as a traveller in Cambodia and a citizen of the word it’s important to learn from and acknowledge such atrocious crimes against humanity. It’ll certainly give you a better appreciation for and understanding of Cambodia.
3. PEOPLE
Although Cambodia’s dark past has left an indelible mark on their national history and identity, they have not let this darkness define them. The people of Cambodia are resilient, and full of humility and genuine kindness.
4. BEACHES
The beaches of Cambodia, namely Koh Rong, are pristine: miles of white sound, crystal clear water, green palm trees, fresh coconuts, and plenty of hammocks. And when you’re there you’ll feel like you must be in a place that charges 10x what you’re paying. Which brings me to my next point…
5. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS VALUE
The value by western standards is unreal. You can get by for less than $10 dollars a day and for $35+ dollars you can live like royalty. But do keep in mind this low cost is an effect of being in a country where most people earn an average of $3 USD a day. So if you’re fortunate enough spread the wealth—for them a dollar goes much further.
There are also dense, lush green jungles to explore, tranquil sleepy towns for relaxing, a vibrant nightlife for a crazy night out, opportunities to volunteer, and the sure chance that you’ll have a truly unforgettable traveling experience.
