Sunset Over The City

Sunsets over the ocean are spectacular. Watching the sun sink into the ocean – while the colors fade from vibrant orange at the epicenter to soft purple as the eye drifts – is breathtaking. Taking the time to watch the sun go down is always a worthwhile activity, at least I think so, as is taking the time to appreciate nature. When I watch the sunset, I am reminded of the beauty around me and the importance of slowing down to look around. What do you see when you stop and look around? And can you find beauty in your surroundings?

The evening when the sunsets is one of my favorite times of day and I love watching the sunset whenever I can. However, it was not until recently that I saw the sunset over a city. You may have heard somewhere that pollution causes more beautiful sunsets. Whether or not this is true, and a scientific explanation may prove it so, I have not been disappointed by the sunsets over Boston.

In order to see the sunset over Boston, you have to either be on a boat or an island. In Boston Harbor, there are 34 islands that make up the Boston Harbor National Recreation Area. They are open to the public and a valuable use you your time. I currently reside on one of these islands and therefore am luck enough to see the sunset often.

Evenings often involve walking down to the dock to watch the sun disappear behind the Boston skyline. Once the sun has set the colors still remain, shifting and fading into night. While, simultaneously the lights of Boston begin to twinkle. Within a short time we watch the city change from day to night. You can imagine the bustle of the day settling into the quiet of the evening as commuters are returning home, making dinner and going about their regular evening schedule.

So if you find yourself in Boston be sure to take the time to visit the Boston harbor islands and in the meantime find the beauty in your environment. Is it the curve of a building or the park down the street? Can you see the sunset or its rise? There is always beauty and nature to appreciate around you, find it and honor that time and place.

Sunsets are just one of the things Mother Nature has to offer us. Here is a look at what the beauty of the world holds:
