An encounter with a shark is not something that most people really want to experience. The movie Jaws definitely put the fear of the ocean into many people. Sharks have been all over the media lately; Shark Week on the Discovery Channel just ended, and several attacks have been reported over the last few months. However, on a happier note, a beached Great White was saved this weekend in Cape Cod by beachgoers who sympathized with the struggling animal.
Great White Sharks
The Discovery Channel has taught us that Great White Sharks are the largest predatory fish in the sea, and can eat something as big as a sea lion WHOLE. The biggest one was caught in 1993 off Prince Edward Island and was 20 feet long. Great Whites usually like warmer coastal waters According to Shark Facts, over 70% of attack victims survive because the shark realizes that what it’s attacking is not it’s normal prey, and it doesn’t finish what it started. The also claim that, “some scientists believe there are less than 10,000 Great White Sharks in the entire world.”
Beached Great White Shark Rescued
Earlier this week, a 7-foot beached Great White was found on the shores on Cape Cod, flailing around in the smallest amount of water, struggling to stay alive. You can see from the video on IFLScience’s page that this shark was in grave danger of dying on that shore. However, several beachgoers who spotted the shark came to the rescue! They threw buckets of water on the beached great white and finally were able to get it back out to sea, where they released it.
Humans to the Rescue!
We often hear sad stories of animals being brutally injured, or even killed, by people. They’re often hunted, poached, and clubbed. I mean, let’s face it, we are still battling Animal Rights issues and several people still don’t agree that animals are worth all that trouble. As a dog owner, and lover of animals in general, I am very aware that each one has it’s own personality and deserve to be treated with more respect than they usually get. But the people that Business2Community are highlighting thought that these creatures were worth risking their lives for. You can see a whole list of people helping animals out of situations that most people wouldn’t have. One man even saved a bear from drowning!
It always makes my heart so happy that there are still humane people out there in this world, who can even sympathize with an animal that is so often painted a monster.
