Forget naming your furry loved ones Max (2014’s most popular male dog name). A good pet name is important because much like human children, your pet will grow into his or her name. The following list will inspire names you can christen dogs, cats, pigs, horses, mice, gerbils — you name it (pun intended). Maybe try not to name a human any of the following:
- Pizza
- Captain
- Gatsby
- Spooky
- Wiley
- Wellington
- Dragon
- Robot
- Paz
- Tuna
- Sherlock
- Watson
- Milkshake
- Sunday
- Oslo
- Bus
- Elmer
- Daffy
- Whiskey
- Idris (for a cat)
- and last but not least, my personal favorite: Waefer.
You can take her name as long as your pet and Waefer never cross paths. That could be a little disorienting.
Note: A general guideline for naming dogs in particular is that you don’t want to go with a monosyllabic name because they sound too much like their commands. It’s easier to hear “Waefer, sit” or “Pongo, stay” than “Bear, sit” or “George, come” because that multisyllabic name indicates that it’s time to listen. But you know, your pet might be a lot of brighter than mine.
I don’t know how I feel about human names for pets. I’m mostly against it but I know this doesn’t seem to be the case for most pet namers. How do you feel about human names for pets?
