Cloud Strife in Super Smash Bros is like Super Mario in Tekken 5

Cloud Strife in Super Smash Bros is like Super Mario in Tekken 5

It was announced by Nintendo over a month ago, and now it has finally happened. Cloud Strife, the famous protagonist from Final Fantasy VII, has been added to the character roster for Super Smash Bros for the Wii U and 3DS. This will most likely have many happy, but this seems way out of place. This is as much out of place as Super Mario would be in Tekken 5!

NINTENDO OFFICIALLY MAKES CLOUD STRIFE AVAILABLE FOR SUPER SMASH BROS

Nintendo announced his official release and it will be available via DLC. He can be downloaded for $5.99 on the Wii U and $6.99 for the 3DS. However, they added more than just Cloud Strife. Nintendo also released one of the most famous locations from Final Fantasy VII in Super Smash Bros. Midgar will now be an available stage to fight in with the latest DLC. Adding on to this Final Fantasy party is the fact that Mii’s can now be dressed in Final Fantasy themed items.

LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT SUPER SMASH BROS IS

Before I state my reasoning on why I dislike this addition, let’s talk about what this game is. Super Smash Bros for the Wii U and 3DS, just like the entire series, is a non-traditional fighting game. This is a fighting game that allows more than two users to fight at once. It also presents a different way to win and that is by blasting your opponent off the stage. The characters that have been present in these games have mostly been Nintendo characters. Characters from franchises such as Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Star Fox, Pokemon, and Donkey Kong. However, the new Super Smash Bros has included third-party characters like Mega Man, Pac-Man, Street Fighter, and now Final Fantasy.

WHY CLOUD STRIFE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ADDED TO SUPER SMASH BROS

In my opinion, there is not a gaming company that has more star power than Nintendo. Mario, Link, Kirby, Fox McCloud, and Samus are just a handful of the awesome characters they have. Cloud Strife is not associated with Nintendo at all so he should not be in this game. He is completely out of place in this game. The other third party characters, like Pac-Man and Mega-Man, just fit more than Cloud does. That could come off as a contradiction, but Mega-Man and Pac-Man, at least, have video games for Nintendo consoles. Cloud Strife has never been apart of anything Nintendo related and has no business in Super Smash Bros.

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT TEKKEN 5

I previously mentioned that adding Super Mario in Tekken 5 would be the equivalent to this move. To understand this, let’s break down what Tekken 5 is. The entitled game is a fighting game that works as a traditional fighting game. This game pits two fighters against each other as they fight to KO their opponent. Extensive combos can be performed and this game has the “feel” of traditional fighters.

LET’S LOOK AT HOW OUT OF PLACE SUPER MARIO WORLD BE IN TEKKEN 5

For those of you who do not know who Super Mario is then, I am ashamed. Anyway, he is the greatest mascot in video game history, but he is not a fighter. We will ignore Super Smash Bros because that is more like a party fighter. However, Mario’s main genre is platforming and party/sports games. For over three decades he has been the leader in platforming. Nobody produces better platforming games than Super Mario. Now, imagine what it would be like to see Mario facing off with King, a fighting character in Tekken. That would rub a lot of people the wrong way, right? They do not mix at all, and that is my point with Cloud Strife and Super Smash Bros.
