For those of you who are unaware, Yahoo is a thing of the past.
Emarketer Inc. actually projected that the stock share for Yahoo would fall to 3.5 percent in 2017. The company’s stock share in 2014 was 5.1 percent, so that is quite a significant drop. Also, the revenue at Yahoo, many analysts predict, will fall by at least 8.2 percent in the next year. However, Yahoo is not alone as Mozilla is killing off their Firefox OS.
FACT 1
Mozilla has made no question about it that they are killing off their Firefox OS. The first announcement of this happened a few months ago, but they recently revealed when it would happen. George Roter, the leader of the Mozilla Participation Lab, said in a statement that as soon as the company finishes version 2.6 of the OS, it will be retired. Roter also acknowledged the fact that because there was already multiple operating systems that were well established, Mozilla was playing catch-up. The conditions were not right for them to compete with the top dogs, Roter points out.
FACT 2
Due to the realization that the company could not keep up with its competitors with the Firefox OS, they have decided to shift their focus to something else. Roter noted that the main reason Mozilla is ending this OS is so they can shift their focus to IoT. IoT is being dubbed the Internet of Things, and he mentions that this is the key to succeeding in the new era. It was also pointed out by Roter that the company is hoping to open an innovation process for IoT. The trickiest part about this, he notes, is to properly navigate the involvement. For all of you Firefox OS users, don’t feel bad because Yahoo is sharing your pain! However, try and look forward to IoT, as that could boost Mozilla back into the swing of things.
