The debate regarding social media’s impact on todays society is not easily fought on either side. There are the obvious downsides such as privacy breach, spreading of misinformation and a general disregard for morals. Yet, there are also some positives that result from spreading social awareness and similar acts of publicity. The struggle will rage on until a formidable opponent arises. Perhaps that will happen sooner than we think. A new social media platform has recently come to light to offer a more humane alternative to Facebook and Twitter.
MIRAMIR PUTS FACEBOOK PRIVACY TO SHAME
Miramir “The Social Network For Change” is a small project with a big idea. The Toronto-based group seeks to unite those who care about the human race on a unique, new social media platform. Its goal is to not just connect anybody, but like-minded individuals who seek to do something about the world’s pressing issues. Of these issues is of course, internet privacy. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter aren’t necessarily recognized for their accomplishments in privacy, but Miramir hopes to change that. Miramir pledges complete privacy, where your activity will never be tracked, your account can be fully deleted and your information will not be sold or given away. Quite contrary to the rules we are used to with Facebook.
TWITTER’S STRICT CENSORSHIP NOT FOUND IN MIRAMIR
2015 saw Twitter lay down some for their harsher censorship rules yet. Their claim is censorship only benefits the site, and helps prevent the publishing of derogatory comments. Their argument is that Twitter isn’t a public space, thus, they have the right to determine what content should be valid. Some users, however, think they may be using their power for harm rather than good. Complaints have been reported of Twitter deleting tweets related to political topics, social issues and generally anything regarding controversy. The goal of Miramir is to open up these topics to the world for discussion. They promise all news articles, groups and events will remain uncensored.
COMBINING THE BEST OF EVERYTHING
Claiming to combine the features of Reddit, Facebook, Ebay, Craigslist, Quora and many more social networks, Miramir seeks to take the best of everything into one, convenient location. Unlike Facebook, content can be upvoted to the top and people can modify their experience to suit their likes and dislikes. The idea behind such a concept that allows freedom and intelligent conversation to exist is surely a great one, let’s hope it is the start of a common trend.
