Facebook is currently making something that is sure to make a huge impact. As of right now, the illustrious powerhouse is working on a map that would show all human-occupied buildings. This new project ties in with the company’s Internet.org Connectivity Lab. This group is required to improve the internet access around the world using satellites, lasers, and drones. This new map from Facebook is intended to help with this project, and here are a few facts you should know about it.
FIRST FACT: HOW MUCH GROUND IT HAS COVERED
The amount of square kilometers that this project has analyzed is simply amazing. For this new Facebook map, around 21.6 million square kilometers of satellite imagery has been analyzed. To put this in perspective, they are analyzing around 350 terabytes of data. What this has done is given Facebook a much clearer idea of where all of the buildings are located.
SECOND FACT: THIS WILL HELP THE DRONES
As many people know, Facebook is currently working on drones that will be able to beam internet signals to the unfortunate people who have no internet. Basically, the entire point of this map was to help the drones know where to use the technology. If they have analyzed and scanned every building, then the chances of getting more people access to the internet are greatly increased, obviously.
THIRD FACT: THIS PROJECT COULD BE OPEN THIS YEAR
The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, recently announced at the World Mobile Convention that they plan on making this open to the public within the year. He also said that the company would like to make further uses of the new feature. The ultimate goal of the company is to unite more people around the world, and this is a great way to do it. This is a huge project, and Facebook definitely has their work cut out for them with this one.
