Sony has confirmed their termination of Playstation TV production. The last shipments of the device where at the end of 2015 but production for the Asia markets will continue. Playstation TV began in 2013, gaining some popularity in Japan. Since then, it was released in western markets with very limited success. Similar to devices like Apple TV, Playstation TV allowed users to access a variety of content through digital download. Users could hook up the device to a TV with and HDMI cable. Once released, Playstation TV was sold for $99. Attempting to draw in more customers, Sony then slashed the price in half.

WHY APPLE TV DESTROYED SONY

In terms of hardware, the APPLE TV was really no match compared to consoles like Xbox and PS4. Even with its 64 GB upgrade, it is far from any gaming machine. That being said, it’s all about the money. Apple TV is significantly cheaper than the Sony alternative. It is also geared towards a different audience. Hardcore gamers are always going to opt for consoles for their games, but what Apple specializes is apps. It is these apps that sets their TV device apart from the rest.

THE FUTURE OF TELEVISION IS IN STREAMING

Gone are the days of television channels. TV is now the form of apps. Tim Cook expressed that we need a new foundation for our TV entertainment. The popularity of tablets and smartphones have changed the way we watch the video. Television as a separate entity has struggled to compete. The next logical step is to bring television to these devices, and this is best done with apps. Tim Cook has big plans for the future for his version of television. Users can expect original content on AppleTV among the likes of Amazon and Netflix. While the future of gaming is best left to Microsoft and Sony, it seems the television days are over for PS4.
