The Motor Trend Channel released an Apple Car exclusive. And it may be worth a look. Especially if you are an Apple product loyalist. With a love for electric, autonomous cars. The Apple Car has designers from the famous Art College of Design in its corner. The Motor Trend roundtable discussion included Motor Trend editors Kim Reynolds and Edward Loh. As well as Tim Stevens from CNET Roadshow, Professor Tim Huntzinger, Mikey Campbell of AppleInsider, and graduate Garrett Debry. Can the Apple Car be as fancy as Tesla?
The Autonomous Apple Car
The Apple Car inspired roundtable discussion touched on an autonomous driving experience. One of the big trends for vehicle innovation these days is autonomous cars. Following in the footsteps of Tesla, Apple aims for driving autonomy. Elon Musk announced that Tesla would have a fully autonomous car in two years. Tesla currently has semi-autonomous cars. But Apple is going straight to fully autonomous.
Designed From the Inside Out
The Apple Car designers want to turn car design around. Using an inside out approach. Most vehicles are designed with the outer shell in mind first. But Apple remains innovative. Taking a new approach, as can be expected. They want to introduce a car into the market that has an augmented reality with a connectivity focus. The designers want passengers to enjoy the time they spend in their vehicle. Whether sitting in traffic or on a road trip.
Seamless and Minimalist Approach
The seamless products of Apple may soon be available on four wheels. The designers want the car to have a minimalist feel. And a seamless look to match. Like most Apple products, their car will continue the design tradition Steve Jobs envisioned. Jobs would surely enjoy the minimalist approach. Since his lifestyle and wardrobe embodied minimalism. It may not be the greatest looking car. But Apple consumers may appreciate its beauty.
The Inside Will Also Be Seamless
No more vacuuming year old candy wrappers and lost change from seats. The inside of the car will also be seamless. It will be without creases that often collect candy, coins, food crumbs and other undesirable garbage. The design team’s aim is to create a seamless living space an autonomous car deserves. They also have Uber and other ride sharing platforms in mind. It may be designed with sharing at the foundation. Making seamless seats a cleaner experience for passengers.
Are Tesla and Apple Autonomous Cars the Future of Commuting?
Everyone may be driving, or riding, in semi-autonomous and fully autonomous electric cars very soon. The Apple Car is a few years out from being finished. Tesla has semi-autonomous electric cars already driving the industry. And fully autonomous Tesla cars are just around the corner. But it may all be for nothing. Laws still need to catch up with technology. Autonomous vehicles will remain parked until federal and state laws permit them to take to the streets. Is the Apple Car appealing?
