Sailor Survives 66 Days Alone at Sea

Louis Jordon:  Sailor Survives At Sea

It’s an amazing story of danger and adventure that sounds like the plot of a movie when a sailor survives at sea.  Movie concepts with that theme have already been made once or twice where a man has an incredible survival story at sea and then gets dramatically rescued. Louis Jordan was rescued in the Atlantic Ocean, 200 miles off the coast of North Carolina after being lost at sea alone for 66 days. His family reported him missing on the 29th of January after he set sail on the 23rd of that month on what was supposed to be a short, solo fishing voyage.

He was found by a German tanker ship and taken aboard until the Coast Guard could arrive via helicopter and take him to a Virginia hospital for treatment, where Jordan walked in under his own power. He was found sitting on top of the overturned hull of his 35 foot sailboat which, reportedly, had been ripped in half. Jordan’s Alberg boat named Angel had capsized while he was sleeping. He woke up flying through the air and his boat was upside down. Talk about a nightmare coming true. He landed hard against the wall, breaking his shoulder in the process.

Jordan told rescuers he survived on rainwater and raw fish that he caught with a net, as well as by stretching out the small amount of food he brought to sea with him. He later told rescuers that prayer was the only way he made it through this ordeal alive and was able to make an emotional phone call to his worried father from aboard the German ship. Jordan miraculously survived with no life threatening injuries, having nothing more than dehydration, exhaustion and the previously mentioned shoulder injury after two months at sea. He was found more than 500 miles away from home.
