What a great feeling it is to contribute a great and useful invention to society; knowing that you are somehow making a difference in the lives of others. The world is full of intelligent and crafty people who are constantly attempting to invent the next best thing. It is such a tragedy when creators are killed by their own creations though.
Here are 5 inventors killed by their own inventions:
1. William Bullock – inventor of the web rotary printing press. He died after getting gangrene in his foot, which was crushed by the machine in 1867.
2. Francis Edgar Stanley – inventor of the Stanley Steamer. He was killed in a car accident driving one in 1918.
3. Marie Curie – famous for isolating radium after co-discovering the element. After working for many years with the it, in 1934, she succumbed to poisoning from prolonged exposure to the radiation and died.
4. Karel Soucek – invented a shock-absorbent barrel. He died while preforming a demonstration in the barrel after being dropped from the roof of the Houston Astrodome in 1985.
5. Michael Dacre – died testing his “flying taxi” in 2009. Some of these inventors killed by their own inventions only wanted to help society, and paid the price with their lives.
These inventors gave their lives to their inventions in one way or another, along with so many others not noted here. It’s a dangerous life to always be creating gadgets and attempting to improve upon them.
