There are things all over the world that are named strangely. Some are hilarious, others pun-tastic, and some are just plain depressing. Artist Damien Rudd spotted some interestingly named places in South Australia, and these sad topographies could give anyone the blues.

A Study in Sad Topographies: Mouth Hopeless

The project has been carried out through Instagram account @sadtopographies, and it takes snapshots from Google Maps screens. Some interesting spots are in North America, like Failure Canyon in Utah, or Lake Torment in Canada. Thanks to the hilarity and slightly sardonic look to these pictures, the account has gotten more than 51,000 followers since it was first started.

There are only 90 pictures in the account, but their now signature #sadtopographies have taken the Internet by storm. One of its more compelling posts shows a place called Mamungkukumpurangkuntjunya Hill, a spot in South Australia. The name is translated to ‘where the devil urinates’ in the local language, Pitjantjatjara. Other hilarious finds talk about Sad Road, Mount Despair, and even a body of water called Melancholy Waterhole.

This Could Drive People to Suicide or Actually Cheer Them Up

These pictures could be triggers, but they could also be small reassurances for the general public. Not only is the hashtag compelling, but the makeup of the pictures is so bleak that it makes it quite funny. Some people could access the site therapeutically, or for a quick pick-me-up throughout the day.

There are interestingly named things all over the world, and they’re not limited to landmarks. Earlier this week, press revealed that Kimye’s new baby boy Saint West, just to prove that the world never disappoints when people expect to be surprised. This Instagram account may even inspire other ones to be created, with creepy, funny or cutely named landmarks and buildings being photographed from Google Maps.
