India has officially called it quits for Facebook. The country has ultimately decided to block the company’s Free Basics service, and it is mainly due to net neutrality. Not only this but also because the country felt like this service was benefiting other services. Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, was able to comment on this situation, and he wasn’t pleased.
There AreĀ 2 Main Reasons Why India Slammed Facebook Again:
FIRST REASON INDIA ENDED FACEBOOK
As mentioned earlier, one of the biggest problems India was having with the service that was being provided is that it favored some services over other ones. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India noted that Facebook works with telecom companies to make certain services free, and others not. Due to this fact, the regulators pointed out that the company is favoring some services, and they didn’t appreciate that.
SECOND REASON INDIA ENDED FACEBOOK
The second reason, and most important reason, for the shut down was because of net neutrality. This is basically what the first reason was, but we’ll look at it a little deeper. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India also gave the fact that no services can offer discriminatory tariffs based on content. Basically, the regulators have decided to ban services that do this, and the Free Basics service did just that.
MARK ZUCKERBERG SPEAKS OUT
The country was very straight forward on why they did this, but Zuckerberg didn’t agree with it. On a Facebook post, he noted how the company has no intention of throttling or blocking the internet. This is how he defined net neutrality, and he found no problem with the app. He also noted how their Free Basics service was necessary to get everyone online quickly. This dilemma was going on for quite a while now, but it can officially be put to rest.
