Amazon really dropped the box on this one, or was it Dropbox that dropped the ball? Box or ball aside, something was dropped and someone is responsible. The latest news surrounding this incident is just as confusing as that first couple of sentences. To clear things up, here are a few facts on the matter.
1. DROPBOX WANTS TO GO INDIE
So it turns out that Amazon was the one that was let go by. In a big way in fact. 90% of Dropbox’s data was moved from AWS to their own private cloud. News on the street says they’ve been hard at work building their own, custom storage servers. This indie campaign will store an exabyte or more.
2. AMAZON IS IMMATURE
Regarding the decision to move out, Amazon has declined to comment on any news source. Usually, when parents let their little ones fly off, they are thrilled at the vision of an empty nest. Not the case here, though. A company that has relied on Amazon for so long has now built something of epic engineering. Seems like a bit of jealousy on their part.
3. AWS ISN’T NEEDED ANYMORE
AWS may have been crucial for the growth of Dropbox but they simply just aren’t needed anymore. They’ve learned, they’ve grown and now they will succeed on their own. Sorry Amazon, you’re just not that cool anymore. Go focus on your live stream fashion shows instead.
4. THE PRIVATE CLOUD IS COOL NEWS
If all your friends made a private cloud would you do it too? The answer here is yes. Private clouds are cool news now. Everyone is doing it. Yes, there are some smaller companies that will still need AWS to survive, but the ones that can sustain themselves, like Dropbox, those are the ones that are becoming self-sufficient and successful.
5. DISKOTECH IS IMPRESSIVE
Diskotech is Dropbox’s customer storage box and it’s impressive. Essentially, Diskotech stores 1PB in 4,536 inches of value. That’s 10% bigger than standard 7U. Similar to what Backblaze is doing, but on a much larger scale. Diskotech is 30% bigger in volume that Backblaze but with a whopping 470% more storage. If that’s not breaking news in amazing engineering, I’m not sure what is.
