<< Puerto Rico: Puerto Rico: Beaches, Caves And The Biggest Telescope In The World (Previous Post)
The sun is beaming down, a few white puffy clouds dot the cerulean sky, and a steady wind fills the sails. I sit on the edge of the boat, staring into the azure sea, hoping to catch a glimpse of a fish or, if I’m lucky, a manta ray. The little island in the distance is growing larger by the minute. It has a few palm trees and very white sand. It is uninhabited and amazingly beautiful. We are on a chartered sail boat off the coast of Fajardo, PR and we love it!
Rafael, Rachel and I are here with our friends who came with us from Massachusetts. They are seeing some of the best that Puerto Rico has to offer, especially when it is cold and snowy at home! As we approach the island, the captain puts down the anchor and we jump overboard. After attaching our snorkels, we stick our faces in the warm water and see lots of colorful, tropical fish. There are so many kinds, some of them in large schools that swim right by us. The bottom is not far away, so we can see the coral and sea fans that perch in the sand. Everything is so beautiful that we keep trying to take pictures. Most of them don’t come out that great, but we have fun trying.
After swimming around for a while, we take some time to explore the island. Isla Palominitos is very small so it doesn’t take long to walk around the whole thing. Many people have seen the island as it is here that Jack Sparrow leaves Angelica in the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s even better in person. We have it all to ourselves while we explore before we head back to the boat to sail to another snorkeling spot.
As part of our trip, we enjoy a delicious home-made lunch and as many refreshing drinks as we can consume. Rachel’s friend, Jack, even gets to steer the boat when we sail for home. This is a perfect way to spend a sunny day; with friends on a boat enjoying all that tropical Puerto Rico has to offer!

We used Erin Go Bragh Charters. The boat was beautiful and well-kept and the captain was entertaining. The food was delicious, the drinks were plentiful and everything ran on-time. It is pricey if you are just one family, but if you want to go snorkeling in the Fajardo area, it is a great way to do so without crowds. There are catamaran tours that go out of Fajardo and they are a little cheaper, but you will be with lots of others people.
You can read about all my family adventures around the world on my blog. My most recent post is about biking down a volcano in Ecuador.
