SleepSense by Samsung Monitors Sleep, Turns Off the TV and More

At the IFA 2015 conference in Berlin today, Samsung revealed its new SleepSense tracker. Scroll down to learn more about what the cool new device can do.

SLEEPSENSE CAPABILITIES

Sleep trackers are sleep-monitoring devices that are worn on wrists. But according to the Australian, the SleepSense has a few other cool capabilities besides monitoring sleep: it can turn off the TV if it detects that you have fallen asleep watching it and left it on, make jet lag easier, operate your air conditioning and audio systems and improve your metabolism.

At the conference, Samsung official Yoon C Lee claimed that the SleepSense can send data about a person’s sleep quality to the Internet after using its sensors to monitor it.

“We now offer the power to track, manage and improve the quality of your sleep,” Lee, the tech giant’s digital appliances vice president, said.

SAMSUNG TO “LIBERATE YOUR WRIST”

As a sleep tracker, perhaps its most innovative feature is that it can be used under a mattress. As Gizmodo commented, it “liberates your wrist”: one of the troubles with sleep trackers is that being wristable devices, people often forget to put them on their wrist before bed. The chances of this happening with the SleepSense device, then, are lower.

OTHERSMART-HOME TECHNOLOGY FROM SAMSUNG

Lee claimed that the SleepSense could be differentiated by similar trackers because of its capabilities to connect with home devices like “the TV, air conditioning and lights”. It is, in other words, a ”smart-home technology”.

OTHER SMARTSTUFF

The SleepSense is one of several “smart” products that will soon be released by Samsung, which bought a start-up called SmartThings last year. As Mashable mentioned, the new sleep tracker is engineered for interactivity with other household devices made by SmartThings that will be released in its new SmartHub package.

As Bloomberg pointed out, Samsung’s new smart-home technologies put it in competition with Apple and Google to “sell systems that turn off the lights when nobody’s in the room and let you control your thermostat from the car or subway.”

Samsung has not yet announced when the tracker will be released.
