China Planting Police Officers in Tech Firms

China is planning to set up network security offices for police officers inside of major Internet companies in China. This will also be done for websites so that authorities can act faster against online behaviors that are illegal in China. This was detailed in a statement released from the Ministry of Public Security.

DEPUTY MINISTER APPOINTS POLICE OFFICERS TO HEAD ONLINE SECURITY EFFORTS

In a conference yesterday, the deputy minister said that police officers are taking a lead role in online security and will work closely with the internet regulators. These network security offices will be set up inside of the influential website and internet firms so that the illegal behaviors can be caught at the earliest.

Chinese authorities have been tightening their control over their domestic internet within the past couple of years. At times they have even reprimanded social media companies such as Sina Corporation, and Tencent Holdings Limited for failing to move quicker to remove scams, rumors, politically sensitive content and pornography.

CUYBERSECURTY LAW DRAFT PUBLISHED LAST MONTH

The Chinese government published a draft of their new cybersecurity law last month that strengthened their control over data, with significant potential consequences for multinational firms and internet service providers who are doing business in the country. This is going to be another addition to the relationships with other countries such as the European Union and the United States, who believe these laws are unfair to them.

PREVENTS INFORMATION FROM BEING OBTAINED BY DATA RESELLERS

This new law also consolidates user privacy information from data resellers and hackers, but also elevated the governments power to get a hold of this information and block private information that is deemed illegal.

In a statement, the ministry said that as the country enters the age of the internet, network security and social stability are important to the economic development and day to day order within the country.

These new measures will also help protect personal information and prevent online theft, rumor spreading, and fraud from occurring. In addition to new laws regarding the internet and technology firms, the Chinese Parliament also passed other national security laws that tighten the governments control in culture, politics, the economy and the environment.
