Apple announced that it would begin two programs to reduce the carbon footprint of its Chinese manufacturing partners. These programs will cut down 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution in China by 2020, which is the equivalent of taking out 4 million vehicles from the roads for an entire year.
Apple also shared that its project on 40 megawatts of solar projects has finished construction in the Sichuan Province, which will make Apple’s operations in China completely carbon-neutral.
Tim Cook shared that climate change is one of the great challenges of these times, and it was about time the company took action and encouraged other companies to join in their efforts. The press release proclaims Apple plans to expand their clean energy investments in China, and build 200 megawatts of solar projects in the northern, eastern and southern grid regions of the country. They also plan on launching a new initiative to encourage their partners to also use clean energy for manufacture operation; their goal is build more than 2 gigawatts of new clean energy.
Foxconn will construct 400 megawatts of solar, starting in the Henan Province, by 2018 to forward Apple’s efforts to go clean. Apple powers 100% of its operations in China and the US with renewable energy, and 87% of it in its worldwide operations.
