Nintendo Direct, among many other announcements, declared that Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud Strife will be joining the team of playable characters. The announcement of new characters for the saga is always a cause for cheer from fans of both Super Smash Bros and Nintendo; previous announcements included Pac-Man, Xenoblade Chronicle’s Shulk and CapCom’s Megaman.

Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud Looks Classic as Ever in the New Super Smash Bros Wii U

In the reveal trailer, Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud looks much like he has before: blond hair, stage gear and his signature buster sword, and his gameplay is very fitting of the character. The trailer makes great references to Final Fantasy 7 recreated naturally in Super Smash Bros play. This is a signature move by Nintendo, who’ve done the same throughout all game reveal trailers.

Along with Shulk, Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud is perhaps the most surprising character reveal for Super Smash Bros, but it’s very welcome.

Final Fantasy 7 Meets Super Smash Bros

Final Fantasy 7 was first released January 31, 1997, and this is not Cloud’s only appearance in 2015’s video games. Cloud is also making an appearance in Kingdom Hearts and the upcoming Final Fantasy. There’s no word on release date on the game or the availability of Cloud’s amiibo, or even the Midgar stage. Nintendo is good at keeping tight-lipped on things like content and pricing, but as 2016 progresses, more info is bound to come along.
