Sony’s Playstation 2 has sold about 155 million units since it was first launched in 2003, thus holding the title of best selling console. The PS4, however, might just give it a run for its money.

The PS4 might just become the best selling console of all time, having already passed the 30 million unit mark after two years of launch. But the bets aren’t on the fact that the PS4 will outsell the PS2 because of how good of a console it is. They’re attaching its success to the upcoming release of the Playstation VR.
The Playstation VR will surely bring out many fans of new technology, and compel them to buy the PS4 to get a complete experience of VR gaming. Sony is already preparing a list of virtual reality games for release on the PS4, and 17 of them were previewed at the Playstation Experience 2015 in San Francisco. Among them were Driveclub VR, Harmonix Music VR and London Heist: The Getaway.

Many virtual reality headsets have made their debut this year and throughout next year, like the Oculus headset, Samsung Gear VR and the Rift and Vive headsets out of HTC. Sony has an advantage in the fact that it is a very trusted manufacturer. Sony also has excellent exclusivity deals wth developers like Activision Blizzard, which guarantee a solid footing in the virtual reality gaming world.

Sony will surely have its stake in the gaming world for a long time to come. Whether or not it will outsell the PS2 is still to be seen, but it’s clear that it will be a front runner with the rise of virtual reality. Some beta testers for Sony’s VR reality games are praising the titles, one even claiming that while taking a break, they set down the controller on a table. Only then did they discover that the table was only present in the virtual world and not in the real world. Needless to say, Sony is definitely a threat to competing consoles.
