Samsung’s Gear VR has joined hands with Flickr to create an ultra-immersive virtual reality app. The new Flickr VR on Gear VR gives users the ability to go through an extensive library of 360-degree pictures through Samsung’s headset.

Yahoo Goes Virtual with Flickr VR on Gear VR

The Yahoo! owned website has launched a VR app, which takes users on a panoramic adventure in ultra high-definition. Flickr released a statement announcing the launch of the app, sharing that from the Aurora Borealis to the Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River, users of the Flickr VR app will experience something unique. This is all thanks to the wonder of the Samsung Gear VR.

The app also works on web, but it’s not the same without a headset. Flickr declared that this is only step one in its venture into virtual reality. It’s looking to include a user interface that is controlled by facial gestures to search through photo libraries. In a very Iron Man-esque move, Flickr is also looking into having libraries that can be controlled through hand movements.

Samsung Gear VR is Becoming A Better Buy Every Day

The Samsung Gear VR is the first real commercial headset released to the masses, and it’s only $100. There is the drawback that only owners of the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge Plus or Note 5 can use it, but this is just standard business.

If the Samsung Gear VR continues to team up with other content websites, it’s a win-win situation. Flickr VR on Gear VR is a small scale project, because Samsung could definitely team up with giants like Instagram and create a new interface, a new way to experience social media. Whether or not it’s in the plans for them, it’s obvious Samsung means business. This could be the only side of the smart device industry that it can stay well above Apple.

It’s very possible that we’ll be seeing people clad in their headsets come the new year. The Oculus Rift is also expected to make its debut in 2016 as well, but it’s very possible that Samsung snags a lot of the profit this Christmas. There are probably a lot of Samsung Galaxy phones and Gear VRs on many wish lists already.
