MIT and NYU have already started teaching computers how to learn techniques that are already practiced by humans, and soon enough this will be put to work by Apple. There has been infinite research with effort to make machine learn much like humans do. That is by learning and practicing whatever new concepts are introduced.
Machines Need A Lot More Information Than Humans to Learn New Things
Machine learning has always been an exciting field of science, as it requires a combination of statistics, computer vision and cognitive science. The teams from MIT and NYU created an algorithm named ‘Bayesian Program Learning Framework‘, and it’s been designed to be self-programming. The Science journal has a full report on the findings, where they set out to make their software learn in every variation of code that the algorithm produced.
Machines Are Quick on the Catch Up
How does the algorithm work? Mostly like humans. Machines are given a few examples of the task they need to complete, and they go through it until they understand it. The machine would get the hang of it eventually, as it’s put through the same process for a time. One of the successful tests include the machine being able to identify and draw a handwritten character after seeing one example of it.
Will These Results Go To Corporations Like Microsoft and Apple?
The preliminary results of these studies were shown to a panel of judges, who were unable to tell the machine-drawn character from the one drawn by humans. This is a very big advancement for artificial intelligence. The big question is, when will this technology get to the hands of Microsoft and Apple?
Both companies are making serious investments. Even Facebook can come into the mix, who is arguably ahead of all other corporations when it comes to artificial intelligence. Their projects have a lot of merit, and by incorporating this kind of algorithm. They could even build one of their own, we could have more machines doing the less fun tasks of the professional and leisure world.
According to Research, There’s A Long Way to Go
It’s a long way till science and technology bring us a machine with the same learning capabilities of a human adult, and it actually may never happen. But teams like the ones at MIT and NYU have a solid lead on the development of artificial intelligence.
Is Modern AI Inspired by Fiction?
It’s safe to assume that a lot of what’s been done with artificial intelligence today comes from the growth of fiction on the subject. From having smart houses to robotic maids to cyber assistants that could even one day become a superhero, it can definitely be written off as one of the main inspirations for modern technology. Artificial intelligence may not have seen the same growth at the same speed as that in comic books, sci-fi movies and TV shows, but it’s safe to say we’re on the right track.
Hopefully Apple, Microsoft and Google Have Awesome AI by 2020
The latest research will continue to be followed up with time. Hopefully with investments from these giant companies, we’ll be looking at a functional artificial assistant in the near future. Perhaps by 2020, we’ll have feet on Mars and on the dark side of the moon, and an AI that can be a second assistant in the office and at work.
The future is bright but not very sharp for technology in this respect, but that’s part of the excitement. The scientific community is most elated by that fact that there is so much that is unknown in the world of artificial intelligence. That’s half the fun of going to work, while the other half lies in the amazing discoveries they make every day.
