Google Photos was just recently released, and it may be set to destroy Apple Photos. Google and Apple never seem to disappoint us with the products they release. It also always seems like two of their products are always being compared. These photo services are no exception.
WHAT GOOGLE PHOTOS AND APPLE PHOTOS ARE
Both of these services offered by these companies are photograph and video sharing services. These services allow the relative users of them a platform that allows them to upload, sort and view their entire image library. These two services are similar, but Google Photos just might be a little better. This, of course, is just an opinion, but let’s look and see why it just might be.
GOOGLE PHOTOS HAS APPLE BEAT IN ORGANIZATION
Although the way they organize their photos is fairly similar, Google still holds an advantage. Apple has their photos organized in what are called smart groups. For example, one smart group is Years. This will do what you could imagine and show photos from a particular year. The other two smart groups are Collections and Moments. Moments are photos taken over the course of a day and Collections are those taken over a number of days. These are sorted by location. However, Google Photos has an easier interface with their organization. With Apple, the date is hard to see on the screen, but Google has the date clear and precise. Also, Google Photos allows users to quickly pinch in and out to zoom in and out to see photos taken in a specific day, month, and year. Also, the scrolling feature of Google Photos is much more responsive and precise than Apple’s.
SEARCH GOES TO GOOGLE PHOTOS AS WELL
One of, if not the coolest, features that Google’s version has is it automatically adds photos to certain categories. For example, if a user has a plethora of sports images it might categorize those photos under “Sports”. It does this automatically and many reviewers have said that it is scary accurate. Also, users can type in a general category into the search engine and it will show all photos they have under it. Type in football and all photos that have anything do with it will show up.
UNLIMITED STORAGE FOR GOOGLE PHOTOS PUTS IT OVER THE TOP
The previous two advantages are great, but this one puts it over the top. Google offers unlimited storage for their users using Google Photos. This is something that Apple does not provide. Apple uses the iCloud service for their photo storage. However, they offer up to 5 GB of free storage. If users want more they will have to pay for it. Also, a beef with this is the fact that they give two options for more size, 20 GB and 200 GB. Is the 180 GB jump really necessary? Images have a very small file size, and having 200 GB of images would mean you would have way more images than anybody should ever have. However, it does not matter with Google Photos, because they do not have a file size limit.
APPLE CEO DOES HAVE ISSUE WITH GOOGLE PHOTOS PRIVACY
If there is one big disadvantage that Google Photos has it’s security. The CEO of Apple, Tim Cooke, actually stated his displeasure to the way Google handles its security for their service. Cooke mentions that they believe their customers should have control of their own information. He states that people may like their free-pay service, but they will not like their email, history, and now photos being data mined. He finished by stating that hopefully users will see this soon.
THE VERDICT OF GOOGLE PHOTOS
Even with this privacy issue that Cooke mentioned, Google Photos is still the way to go. With its unlimited storage, advanced search, and better organization it is still better than Apple’s version.
