Does the thought of machines becomу so smart that they take over the world and leave humans in the dust scare you? Well, it needs to scare both IBM and Google. Both of these companies are working with AI, otherwise known as artificial intelligence. They need to know that if they make AI too smart it could be the downfall for many.
GOOGLE ACQUIRES AI FIRM AND IBM HAS WATSON
Both IBM and Google are no strangers with artificial intelligence. Nearly two years ago, Google acquired a London-based AI firm known as DeepMind. According to Google, they bought them for $400 million. This has led them to work with artificial intelligence programs as well as robotics. IBM, on the other hand, developed what is known as the Watson computer. This is a computer that answers questions and was built to apply natural language processing, automated reasoning, machine learning, information retrieval, and knowledge representation. This sounds all good and dandy, but is there a real risk to this? A few tech company CEO’s think so.
CEO’S WARN COMPANIES LIKE GOOGLE AND IBM ABOUT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Two company CEO’s have spoken out about how AI could actually be a dangerous revelation. The CEO of Connectifier, John Jersin, mentions how this technology is very powerful and needs to be taken advantage of. However, Jersin says that people are a little bit concerned that this will impact their industry in the long term. What if these machines led to humans not needing to work anymore? This would result in a loss of jobs and revenue for people. Also, the CEO of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, actually said that AI could end up being more dangerous than nukes. Even Stephen Hawking, one of the most intelligent minds ever, stated that AI could signal the end of humans.
IS THE RISK OF AI WORTH IT FOR COMPANIES LIKE GOOGLE AND IBM
Well, Jersin mentions how this technology needs to be taken advantage of. However, he also states the potential issues. So does the risk outway the reward? As long as companies do not make their machines more intelligent than themselves, they should be OK. If humans still hold the advantage in intelligence, then we should not have to worry about being taken over by AI. Google and IBM will have to keep that in mind in the future.
