One of the more controversial purchases in the history of Microsoft is when they purchased the phone assets of Nokia. Ever since the day the deal was finalized, in April 2014, Microsoft has been trying to get off from the ground with Nokia phones. Now, we turn to just recently, last month, as it appears like the two may be improving together. The super-heavyweight tech company finally released the Windows 10 mobile update for Nokia Lumia smartphones on March 16th of this year.
THE NEW WINDOWS 10 UPDATE FOR NOKIA PHONES
This specific update for the Nokia Lumia phones was certainly a long time coming. If one remembers, the update was actually supposed to be rolled out in December of last year, but it never did. Thankfully, though, the patience of Nokia fans paid off and they got their update. However, there were a few noteworthy Lumia smartphones that didn’t receive the update. Among them are the Lumia 1320, 1020, and 520 and Microsoft explained why they weren’t included. The company stated, in a blog post, that because Windows 10 offers new innovations, older phones don’t treat it well. Basically, if they added the update on those smartphones it could have ruined the user experience.
THE CONTROVERSIAL PURCHASE BY MICROSOFT
This recent update, at least, shows improvement, but it wasn’t always that way. Just a year after the company purchased the phone assets of Nokia, they wrote-off $7.6 billion related to the acquisition. Jack Gold, the principal analyst at J. Gold Associates, couldn’t have said it more perfectly at the time. Gold bluntly said that it was a mistake to begin with and that the company had no business getting involved in a low-margin phone business. However, maybe after this recent update, it will be smooth sailing. Although, that also may be looking at the glass half full.
