Apple takes a Tesla approach to saving the world. Apple may not be developing the next electronic car like Tesla. But they are using their apps to inspire environmental change. Earth Day 2016 is approaching and from now until April 24, some apps will be Earth Day inspired. The earth initiative is a joint effort by Apple and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The WWF leads in conservation efforts around the world. Apple teaming up with the WWF is powerful. But can the impact be as innovative as Tesla?
Apple Apps vs. Tesla Technology
If you have visited the App Store recently, you may have noticed a few changes. Apple has made a few front-end shifts to help motivate app purchasers to give. They have developed an environmental theme with earth-minded messages. And the Apps teaming up in the Earth Day initiative are big names. Angry Birds 2, Trivia Crack, VSCO, and Hearthstone are among the apps for environmental change this year. And 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the WWF. Tesla is known for their environmentally innovative technology. But their impact is possibly more long term than downloading a few apps. Their focus on electronic, solar, wind, and hydro-sustainability is honorable. But it could take decades to become mainstream.
Tesla’s Earth Day Contribution
What about Tesla’s Earth Day contribution? Tesla has a few Earth Day inspired promotions happening as well. They have an Earth Day Tee for men for purchase on their online store. All proceeds go toward a reforestation effort around the world. They are screening “Racing Extinction,” a 2015 Sundance film about the current environmental crisis. And they will have a few electronic car shows on Earth Day this year as well. Tesla’s efforts are commendable. But their audience base may not be as big as Apple’s App Store.
How Earth Friendly is Tesla?
There is a bigger question to ask this Earth Day. Why is Elon Musk so eager to colonize Mars? Tesla is all about saving earth. But SpaceX, Elon Musk’s space innovation company wants to get people off earth. SpaceX aims to bring people to Mars within a decade. And there are rumors that Musk wants to retire on the Red Planet. It is also essential to think how environmentally friendly building and launching spaceships from earth is. Can Mars SpaceX rockets be Tesla “green” too?
