Apple may have an unlikely partner in the 2017 iPhone 7S launch. If you thought they could create all the technology it needed forever, you may be surprised to hear that Apple will be teaming up with Samsung. That’s right. They have agreed to a deal that would provide Apple with their organic light-emitting diode displays for the iPhone 7S. Some thought this day would never come. But it goes to show that a large dollar amount can bond-tech enemies.

It is hard to believe that Samsung would just hand over technology that Apple can’t get their hands on. It would have been great if they turned down the request. But business is business. And you may have made the same deal. So how much did it cost Apple? They bought 100 million organic light-emitting diode displays for the iPhone 7S for $2.6 billion.

A Tech Victory in a Long Battle

Samsung is the victor in this round of the tech battle. They score a few points for having better displays. And their cash flow increases by a few billion. Apple and Samsung have a storied past. The two are currently in the midst of a U.S. Supreme court case. It is over patent violations as usual. Relating to smartphone technology that Apple thinks Samsung violated. Their battle can also be found in advertising. As both companies battle for the multi-billion dollar mobile consumer market. But it is great news for iPhone 7S fanatics. Since they will be getting a new display next year when the iPhone 7S is projected to launch.

What Does the Mobile Future Hold for Unlikely Friends?

This is not the first collaboration between the two mobile phone industry leaders. Samsung builds the processors for its iPhone and iPads. In 2009, Samsung Display supplied LCDs during the beginning of the legal disputes over patent infringement. But Apple has used LG Display technology in the more recent past. Friendship may not be afoot with the signing of the deal. But the iPhone 7S will get the displays the iPhone has been waiting for years for. While Samsung gets bragging rights.
