The recent attacks aimed at Jeff Bezos and Amazon by GOP nominee Donald Trump was interesting. To say the least. It may be that Donald Trump is slightly jealous of Bezos’ success with Amazon. It could also be a return of fire. Bezos reportedly said that the Washington Post would investigate Donald Trump’s life. News reporters doing what news reporters do should not be that big of a deal. However, the Washington Post is owned by Jeff Bezos. Will this feud lead to some very high taxes and restrictions for Amazon if Trump makes it to the Oval Office? Is Bezos worried about the future of his companies? One thing is for sure. The Amazon founder sure makes Donald Trump look bad when it comes to business.
Is Donald Trump Really that Good?
Amazon founder and owner of the Washington Post, among other business ventures, make Trump look bad. Some may think that this is a no brainer. Trump has a political agenda and strategy that is very bold. This causes him to be very unlikable by some. But Donald Trump looks bad for another reason. Jealousy. Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder has an estimated net worth of $46.7 billion. More than Elon Musk, but less than Bill Gates. Donald Trump, on the other hand, has only an estimated net worth of $4 billion. These were 2015 numbers, so the gap could be wider.
From Amazon to the Washington Post
Jeff Bezos founded Amazon. But he then bought a newspaper for $250 million? It might not make sense, but it could be good business. Bezos bought the 140-year-old news institution in 2013. The Amazon founder did what he does best. Innovate and be successful. This is the guy who lands rockets on ocean platforms after all. In three years, Bezos took the failing newspaper and completely turned it on its head. Now the readership is huge. And it has also found a digital presence as well.
Trump and Bezos
Donald Trump accused Bezos of having too much power. He said that Bezos was using the newspaper for personal gain. Controlling the news and controlling how companies work. But Bezos has said that he has no editorial control over The Washington Post. The Amazon founder only does what he is traditionally good at. Tech stuff. That is why the newspaper has exploded digitally. Bezos said that the Posts engineer team rivals any Silicon Valley engineer team. A bold statement, but hard not to believe. Trump may just be jealous. While he is stuck on the campaign trail, he may be missing the boardroom.
Who is better at business, Trump or Bezos?
