It’s the beginning of the end for oil giants BP and Mobil. At least, that’s what Elon Musk thinks. The first step in his plan for a greener, electric future starts with the merging of Tesla and his solar panel company, SolarCity. Wall Street doesn’t agree with the merger as it doesn’t represent any immediate profits. However, that’s just the kind of thinking that keeps us from evolving. At the moment, Musk is willing to take a hit on the profits and recognize the bigger picture.

To Elon Musk, there is so much more to this game than making money. Sure, he could focus on making Tesla the most profitable car company out there but he is not Henry Ford. Musk is visionary and electric cars are just a small part of that vision.
In 10-20 years, society will no longer be reliant on BP and Mobil. Homes and buildings will use cheap and efficient solar technology for their energy. Everyone will have a high-powered battery in their cars and basements. Furthermore, energy will become a tradable commodity. Everyday people can buy or sell their energy on an online marketplace.

Contrary to popular belief, Musk doesn’t want to destroy the oil industry. If anything, he wants to help them. It’s not his goal to come in and turn the world on its head. Instead, he prefers to show the world the path and open the door for them.
Once automakers see electric cars as a product they can make a profit from and a product that is the future, then they will challenge Musk. He knows more than anything that competition inspires change. He wants people to take him down as it means they are trying hard to change the industry and as a result, change the world.
