In a fitting tribute to the iconic science fiction franchise, Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti posted a selfie on her Twitter account wherein she’s seen wearing the beloved uniform that officers on board “Starfleet,” the exploratory organization in the Star Trek universe wear. In the background of the photo is the Dragon spacecraft that’s been just berthed to the International Space station. It was NASA astronaut Terry Verts who helped capture the Dragon craft last week in a procedure that took less than three hours. Unlike the multitude of Hollywood movies with unbelievable science fiction plots, this is one space adventure that’s for real!
Space X’s Dragon Brings Other Delights for the Astronauts Onboard the ISS
When it comes to travel, there are few companies thinking more on the cutting edge than Elon Musk’s space company Space X, that designed and produced the Dragon spacecraft from its headquarters in Hawthorne, California. The company has designed the partially resuable Dragon craft indigenously and had several successful missions to the ISS.
Star Trek fanboys are bound to be thrilled with this display of love for the show by astronaut Samantha Christoforetti and will probably be looking forward to more such acts not just by her but also other astronauts in the future. Star Trek is known for being the first in the science fiction genre that spawned off more recent series like Star Wars. Of course, Samantha Christoforetti is just one of the thousands of fanatical Star Trek fans across the world who love their just love their space adventures that extra bit.
ISS in the Spotlight this Week!
This is the second time this week that the International Space Station or ISS as it’s called has been in the news. The ISS has just been replenished with some interesting supplies this week by Space X’s Dragon that was the subject of plenty of news coverage. Within the supplies is a fully functional coffee machine that’s been specially designed to work in zero gravity by the renowned coffee multinational Lavazza, Argotec, an engineering company and the Italian space agency itself. And it’s named the “ISSPresso!” This coffee machine is quite special as making such a device work in space is no mean feat but the companies involved have managed to do it!
With these recent developments regarding the International space station, space travel enthusiasts all over would be looking forward to more such news that makes gets us humans one step closer to exploring the cold vastness of space.
