There are more than 40 million abortions performed worldwide every year. In addition, there is a rough 0.03 percent of women who, for different reasons, aren’t able to terminate their pregnancy. The numbers are different from one country to another, since there are many places where abortions are illegal, for various reasons.
Some people believe that abortions can lead to a life full of trauma and regrets, for the women who made the decisions. However, a new study on this matter shows curious results.
Do Women Regret Having Abortions?
After a three-year research period, in which about 670 women were regularly surveyed on the subject of their abortions, the results came showing that no less than 95 percent of women who have had abortions do not regret their decisions.
The study was published last week in the multidisciplinary academic journal PLOS ONE and it involved two groups of women: some having first-trimester procedures and others having abortions within two weeks under facilities’ gestational age limits at the same facilities.
More Than 50% Said It Was a Difficult Decision
Around half of the women interviewed admitted that the decision was difficult, or very difficult, but none of them showed any signs of post-abortion trauma syndrome, even if this is a very discussed subject.
The study conducted by researchers from the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at UC San Francisco’s School of Medicine, found no differences between the women who had first-trimester abortions and the others.
Abortions are Considered the Right Decision
The fact that women don’t regret their abortions doesn’t mean they don’t need emotional support at the time of the procedure, and even after the fact. They might not encounter long-term issues, depression or other negative feelings from having abortions, but all women have some sort of emotional reaction to this procedure. However, these are considered normal and they disappear in time.
In accordance to the declarations given by the authors of the study, even if women might be emotional when they decide on an abortion, the majority of those participating in the study considered the abortion the right decision not only in the short-term but also for the long-term.
