Two Million-Pound Chicken Recall Due to Salmonella

Massive Amount of Chicken Products Could Be Contaminated

It’s been a bad week or two for chicken lovers. There’s been over one million pounds of chicken recalled under suspicion that they could have a salmonella contamination. There was also a report that salmonella could be spread by kissing chickens as well, making this a bad week for chicken eaters and kissers alike. Those who were excited to eat (or kiss) some chicken products won’t be thrilled at the news that today, another chicken recall was announced. 1,978,670 pounds of a variety of chicken products are being recalled because of the potential of a Salmonella Enteritidis contamination. This latest chicken recall was announced today by the USDA.

Koch Poultry The Main Offender in Latest Chicken Recall

Aspen Foods, a division of the Koch Poultry Company, are the manufacturers that have been forced to recall nearly two million pounds of chicken. It’s not subject to just one of their products either – the USDA specified that they were recalling frozen, raw, stuffed, and breaded chicken. A total of 18 brands have been associated with this chicken recall, having sold the possibly infected products. These include notable names like Safeway, Kirkland, Spartan, and others.

Possibly Contaminated Chicken Has Several Tells

Bought chicken recently and worried it’s from a contaminated brand in this chicken recall? There are ways for you to figure out if it’s bad. The products from the chicken recall were produced and packaged between April 15th and July 10th of this year. The “best if used by dates” fall between July 14th, 2016 and October 10th, 2016. And don’t forget to check the USDA inspection mark! Any items affected by the chicken recall have the same number within the mark – P-1358. If anything, it serves as a solid reminder to always be careful and check what you’re buying.

Bell & Evans Nuggets Also Being Recalled

It’s rare that a company is forced into a 20,000 pound chicken recall and that’s not the worst chicken news, but Murry’s, Inc. is sure to be happy that the Aspen recall is overshadowing them. Murry’s recalled 20,200 pounds worth of chicken nuggets, currently being sold as Bell & Evans Gluten Free Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets. The nuggets of this chicken recall tested positive for Staphylococcal enterotoxin, which isn’t salmonella, but instead a form of food poisoning that can impact someone just minutes after consuming it.
