Cryogenic sleep chambers in science-fiction movies have been allowing space travelers to travel light years for decades. Now scientists studying cryogenic sleep chambers believe that cryogenic sleep may be the key to distant space travel. Science often recreates what science fiction has predicted will someday be possible, but cryogenic sleep could be the greatest achievement scientists have ever drawn from science fiction.
How Could Cryogenic Sleep Actually Be Possible?
There are many ways that scientists have theorized long term space travel could be possible with cryogenic sleep, but as technology becomes more advanced researchers get closer to being able to perfect the act of cryogenic sleep.
SpaceWorks the space engineering corporation has received funding from NASA to provide potential solutions to get humans into deep space using cryogenics. They have surmised that one solution that could make this a possibility is therapeutic hypothermia. SpaceWorks explains that there are examples of advanced hibernation techniques in other species of mammals, so humans should be able to withstand the stresses of forms of cryogenic hibernation as well.
If Cryogenic Sleep Were Possible What Would That Mean For the Future Of Space Travel?
SpaceWorks explains that since 1945 cryogenic sleep has gone from something about which very little was understood, to a process undergoing clinical trials. Furthermore they believe that a new medical breakthrough known as the RhinoChill IntraNasal cooling system could be the answer to long term cryogenic hibernation. RhinoChill works by inducing a type of hypothermia in which the processes in the human body slow enough to enter a stabilized state of cryogenic hibernation.
Ushering In a New Era Where Science Fiction and Reality Merge Together seamlessly
Increasingly the scientific breakthroughs on the silver screen are emerging as viable solutions to everyday queries. However, this doesn’t make the increasingly likelihood that we will most likely travel deep space using cryogenic sleep any less astounding. Breakthroughs in medical technology, and funding from the most highly regarding space institutions will almost guarantee that cryogenic sleep will be a reality for Earthlings to explore the furthest reaches of unknown space.
