Mercedes-Benz self-driving cars will soon be a thing, as the car maker is making the first steps toward advancing autonomous driving technology for its cars. These features will debut in the new line of E-Class cars in the spring of 2016.

Mercedes-Benz Self-Driving Cars Will Be Able to Turn Lanes For You

The first step will be for cars to switch lanes autonomously, but only when it has confirmed that it’s safe to do so. This comes out of Dailmer, leading figure in autonomous driving, and it has some parts of Tesla’s autopilot software, launched this October.

The car will ideally be cruising between 50mph and 112mph, so long as steering assist is activated. This feature will keep the car in the center of the lane. If the turn signal is turned on for over two seconds, the car will automatically register if it is safe to switch lanes, and then do so. This feature will be relying on a camera and a radar to fish for lane markings, and Mercedes-Benz has declared that it will only work on multi-lane highways.

Smart Driving Comes to Luxurious Mercedes E-Class

The news were published in a release from the car maker, insisting that it will make the less fun parts of driving easier and more comfortable. Autonomous driving has the potential to ensure safety and discourage reckless drivers, and this small step will hopefully encourage more features to be slowly integrated onto Mercedes cars.

The auto maker has big plans for autonomous driver, especially after unveiling a concept car that could drive itself. Drivers who chose to shift to autonomous driving can turn around and face passengers, and have an experience akin to being in a train car. It even introduced a self-driving truck, which proves that Mercedes is taking this new technology very seriously.
