One may think that email wasn’t invented until the 1990’s (moment of silence for its creator Ray Tomlinson who just passed away) but iPhone users are reporting something else. Apparently, a certain glitch appears to affect users of the email app and receive emails from 1970.

This “glitch” only seems to be affecting users on the iOS system. The emails they receive contain no content and are all dated January 1, 1970. No subject or sender can be related to the emails. At the moment, it has been determined this is nothing more than an iPhone glitch and not any kind of malicious software. However, dead people from the past may be getting more creative with their communication techniques.

Users on Twitter certainly expressed their confusion after the email glitch. Many thought they were being duped again after a recent iPhone prank from February. The prank involved setting your iPhone date back for January 1970, restarting the device and getting a cool, retro Apple animate. Essentially, all this did was make your phone useless. This time around, the email bug is no prank, but just a technological error. Is it impossible to receive an email from 1970 right? Even if the first electronic message was sent by Tomlinson in 1971, the modern form of an email wasn’t created until the 1990’s. Unfortunately, this glitch isn’t as cool or frightening as many hoped. Just a simple annoyance. There is a solution, though.

These emails have been showing up when iOS users check their email in a different time zone. January 1, 1970, is 0 in UNIX time. UNIX time is the way computers comprehend dates and time. When an email is sent without any time data, or timezone, iOS will get confused and default to zero. Since zero is 1970, this is the route of the glitch. Many users have reported a solution to the bug. By simply closing the email app and giving a hard reset on the iPhone (holding the lock and home button, your woes of yesteryear will be gone.
