Nothing screams America more than a good ol’ hot dog with all the fixings. This 4th of July, why not showcase your patriotism by attending Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest?
South America
This year, participants completed a 13-event qualifying circuit held through out the United States during the spring. On Friday, the top speed eaters from the preliminaries (held in 12 cities nationwide) will all gather on the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island, NY to battle against the clock and compete in the contest that has been held annually since 1916.
16 men and 12 women are expected to compete in the finals for a $40,000 total prize. Last year, Joey Chestnut, currently the #1 ranking eater in the world, set a new world record by consuming 69 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, currently holds the world record in the women’s competition for consuming 45 in 2012.
With such fierce competition, this year will certainly be an entertaining way to spend your 4th of July. The event is also free and open to the public, but make sure to arrive early (D, F, Q and N trains to final stop) to get a good spot. While you are there, you can also spend a good part of your day on Coney Island, walking the boardwalk, riding some rides and watching the fireworks, of course. It is sure to be an adventure you can’t miss.
