It’s hot. And to make matters even worse, it’s the kind of hot that makes you want to stick your head in the refrigerator or navigate toward the closest air-conditioned store with no intention of buying anything. It’s the kind of hot that makes you wish clothes were never invented; the feeling of your pants sticking to your legs and your legs sticking to your seat makes you almost contemplate ripping off your shorts. Almost.
Air and Water
Maybe, you should cool off at this year’s City of Water Day.
The City of Water Day is a gigantic celebration of water. On Saturday, July 12th, the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance (MWA), an alliance comprised of over 700 organizations with ties to our regional waterways, will host a daylong event filled with various activities that highlight the importance of water and its role in bringing us all closer together.
This year, the event will be held in two main locations: Governors Island in NY and Maxwell Park in Hoboken, NJ. However, there will also be events around the harbor, as well as in various neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs, Yonkers and New Jersey. From 10am – 4pm, you can expect to find free ferry rides, historic boat tours, live music, and great food, of course.
Take an hour-long trip from the Yankee Pier at Governors Island aboard the Schooner Adirondack or participate in an idyllic tour of the LILAC, a ship from the 1930’s that once carried lighthouses and buoys for the U.S. Coast Guard.
If you enjoy more hands-on activities, keep an eye out for exciting, adventure filled projects, such as the Con Edison Cardboard Kayak Race, a cooperative team event that requires you to construct and race a fully functioning kayak made entirely out of sheets of corrugated cardboard, gaffing tape and rolls of waterproof packing tape!
It’s either sink or swim, so be sure to bring your cameras and possibly a change of clothes.
