Recently, Antarctica revealed more there is more to life than we know. Russian scientists believe they have found something incredible, buried deep within the Antarctic ice. They have been privy to the inside of a subglacial lake, under the Antarctic ice, new life forms have been discovered. Antarctica reveals life forms have been sealed off for millions of years, until now.
Secrets Antarctica Revealed Of Lake Vostok
Russia has been drilling in the Antarctic, on and off for more than a decade. It’s only been recently that Antarctica revealed its underworld life. Samples from the water were taken by the Russian scientists to be studied. The lake water has been left alone for nearly 14-million years, isolated underneath the frozen crusts of snow and ice.
Lake Vostok has been considered one of the closest, natural elements that can give us true insight into the adventures that occurred during the ice age. The icy darkness that is the lake, flowing under more than 12,000 feet of ice is where Antarctica revealed the life and times of the past, giving us a small glimpse into what our planet endured during that time. After the water was sampled, it was found that there was bacterial DNA of a type that has never been seen before. It did not appear to match any other bacterial DNA encountered. The Antarctic did indeed let us in on a little secret of new life never before explored or known by man.
Sergei Bulat of the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute in Russia, first came across the unidentifiable DNA. Bulat compares it to finding DNA on Mars, saying that it would mean without a doubt, that there is life on Mars. Antarctica revealed life that is new to us, but still very much a mystery.
Russia Reaches Lake Depths First
Russia, being the first to discover this new life is in the lead with discovery, with both the United States and Britain close behind. This new life is almost like a new toy for scientists that they can’t wait to get their hands on it. This time, Antarctica revealed life around Lake Vostok, but within the last year, specimens were found in the subglacial Lake Ellsworth by United States researchers. However, when drilling became a problem, the excursion was called off.
This new life, living peacefully under the Antarctic ice for over millions of years has brought on an exciting new adventure for scientists like Sergei Bulat to discover. Scientists from the United States, Britain, and Russia are all traveling to see what they can find in this discovery, and most importantly, what they can learn.
Life in Antarctica holds a certain appeal to people in spite of extreme frigid temperatures. Just asked Eric Larsen, certified polar adventurer:
