Timeshares: Are They Best For Travel Or Investment?

When it comes to viewpoints on timeshares, individuals that travel on a regular basis usually have conflicting opinions on the vacation-related matter.

On one hand of the debate, those that travel would much rather use an alternative means of lodging when they go away. On the other, which is said to only account for a mere 8 percent of the public opinion-are literally counting down the minutes until they reach their desired destinations so they can kick back inside their timeshares, according to the American Development Association (ARDA).

Steve Alessandrini, the senior director for public relations at Wyndham Worldwide/Resort Condominiums International recently spoke to My Central Jersey on the debatable travel dilemma.

“When you buy a timeshare, you know that you already paid for that week so you want to use it. You are locked in your vacation and you are ensuring yourself that you are going on vacation that year,” he told the site on May 19.

Interestingly enough, the average price of a timeshare is roughly $19, 725. However, each individual space is different – the amenities inside each one can vary, amongst other things.

In terms of the financial structure, the payment on a timeshare is usually more affordable than that of a traditional vacation lodge or resort, as owners of the respective properties only have to fork over money for what they use. To top that off, the hassle of annual property maintenance is not an issue that has to be dealt with.

For those that aren’t as keen on the travel aspect and looking to make a profit on a timeshare, Merrill Lynch senior financial advisor Robert D’Alla has some advice:

“It’s one of those things like joining a country club or putting a pool in your backyard. If you’re really going to use it and enjoy it, you look at it as something that you’re investing in for your family,” he said.

D’Alla also mentioned that unlike purchasing a vacation home, buying a timeshare takes both planning and education.

“Do your homework and talk to people who have previously owned one because their are hidden costs and people need to be education.
