Mitsubishi may have a new partner after their admitted mileage scandal. Nissan is willing to make a big investment on Mitsubishi, betting $2.2 billion that they can overhaul the company’s image. Mitsubishi admitted to falsifying fuel-economy data for some of its models. A mistake that will cost them vital shares in the automakers holdings. Nissan swooped in with billions with hopes of becoming the majority shareholder of the failing auto company. This could have a big impact on the increasing demand for electric cars. Will Tesla, Google, and Chrysler keep asserting dominance in the electric car race?
Nissan Has Electrifying Plans for Mitsubishi
How much of a company will $2.2 billion buy you? Mitsubishi shares declined to 575 Yen, while Nissan shares nearly double that. If the deal goes through, Nissan will control the company with a 34 percent stake. The move will welcome Mitsubishi to the already innovative growth of Nissan and Renault SA of France’s partnership. This may allow for more affordable electric cars to hit the road. Tech investment for electric vehicles would be spread thinner. And development costs would decrease as well. This could keep Tesla, Google, and Chrysler on the ropes as the electric car race continues.
The Google Chrysler Team
Google teamed up with Fiat Chrysler this month in order to revolutionize autonomous driving. Google and Chrysler are hoping to be first in autonomous driving. The technology may not be new with Tesla innovation far superior. But offering an affordable autonomous car to the public may be in favor of Google and Chrysler. It may not be super cool like Tesla, since they are focusing on 100 prototype autonomous minivans. At least soccer moms can relax and not worry about driving.
Who will Tesla Team Up With?
It seems that every car company is teaming up in some form or another in order to compete. Is Tesla really that cool? Tesla has teamed up with a lot of company’s, but none for a full on car assault project. They have Airbnb offering charging stations, solar companies, and let’s not forget about NASA and SpaceX. Maybe Elon Musk can get a little NASA love for the next Tesla Model? Tesla isn’t worried, and they really have no reason to be. They offer a completely different class of automobile. The Leaf is great and affordable. Minivans will always be minivans. But the Model S and Model X are superior machines offering speed, luxury, and electricity.
